Get Organized With 5 "Hidden" Storage Areas

Perhaps your home is very small, or perhaps your collection of stuff is very large. At any rate, you need to maximize every square inch of your storage space. Youve jammed every closet, filled every shelf and stuffed every drawer. What more can you do?

As a professional organizer and designer of custom storage systems Ive learned that the first step in maximizing space is to minimize useless clutter, but lets say youve pared down your collection of items to the truly useful, sentimental and/or necessary. If thats the case then its time to become a bit of an explorer. Your goal is not exotic artifacts or chests of gold but another hidden treasure-- extra storage space! Start with the 5 hidden storage areas listed below, and then see how many more storage treasures you can find in your own home.

1. The back of the closet door-- One of the more obvious hidden storage areas is also one of the least used. Approximately 50% of all clients I work with fail to use this space. The back of your closet door is an excellent place to hang and store everything from shoes, to clothes, to hats and accessories. A wide variety of door-mounted systems are available to make the most of this usually hidden space-- from simple robe hooks to canvas bags capable of holding dozens of pairs of shoes.

2. Under the bed-- Theres a whole closet of space under your bed! Under-bed space is often either overlooked or poorly utilized. Rather than treat the space as a large hidden junk drawer (Lets find another space for your college bowling trophies and the 5-year old tax returns!), purchase plastic under-bed storage containers particularly designed for the task. Look for ones with secure, snap-on lids that open on both ends and small wheels to make placing and removing the containers easier. This is an excellent idea when your lack of closet space requires you to rotate your clothes from season to season.

3. Above the toilet-- Rather than a single towel-bar or framed picture above the toilet consider additional storage in the form of an tagre or space-saver cabinet. These handy shelving units that fit over and above your toilet can be found in almost any style to match your dcor and offer everything from simple open shelving to glass-inset cabinet doors. Depending on the style purchased they can be used to store towels, toiletries, make-up and more.

4. The garage ceiling-- Most people tend to utilize only one surface in their garage- the floor. Newer storage systems and cabinets have begun to make use of vertical wall space, but theres still one area that is almost always overlooked and underused- the garage ceiling. Many homes have garages with 9-10 foot ceilings, and for most, the two or three feet above their vehicle is simply empty space. Many storage product manufacturers now sale overhead storage racks designed to hold everything from boxes of Christmas decorations to lawnmowers. Some even come equipped with electric motors to raise and lower the platform making this solution ladder-free and lower-back friendly.

5. Stored luggage-- This has been my secret storage weapon for years. My wife and I purchased a full set of large suitcases to travel overseas years ago, and while they worked wonderfully on vacation, they became a huge waste of precious space back home. Our solution-- use them as additional storage! Over the years we have used our largest, rarely-used suitcases to store out-of-season clothing, Christmas gifts, books, and during one move, we even stored dishes in them.

Now that youve been giving a beginners field guide to finding hidden storage treasures, lace up your boots, grab your binoculars, and see what uncharted storage space you can discover in your own home!

DNA Evidence - History and Status

When Gregor Mendel published his studies of inherited characteristics of pea plants in 1866, he probably didn't know he was starting a sequence of events that would end in the 1987 conviction of someone in the United States based on DNA evidence. This article discusses the history and current status of the use of DNA evidence in the United States. How DNA Evidence is Gathered and Used

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is a nucleic acid consisting of two chains of nucleotides bonded together in a double helix, and is responsible for determining the inherited characteristics of each person. Historically, DNA could only be extracted reliably from clean specimens of blood or other body fluids. Due to recent scientific developments, DNA evidence can be extracted and amplified from a variety of samples, including licked stamps, dental floss, used razors, hair, and even sweaty t-shirts.

The DNA evidence is taken back to the laboratory where the sample is cleaned and prepared. The DNA is cut into small, manageable pieces using enzymes, and then it is categorized by size using a process known as "gel electrophoresis." We all share some 99.9% of our DNA, but there are specific regions in our DNA that differ. In certain areas, given sequences of the bases adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine repeat themselves. The sequences, known as variable number tandem repeats, or VNTRs, create a unique personal blueprint that can be used as DNA evidence.

The VNTRs are marked with a radioactive compound that aids in being able to make an x-ray image of the DNA sequence. These images, which are the DNA evidence ultimately presented in courts, can then be compared to the DNA sample collected from a suspect.

The DNA sample from the crime scene and the suspect are compared at a number of different VNTRs, exponentially increasing the probability that a match between the two specimens is not an error. Statistically an innocent person would be more likely to win the lottery than to be inaccurately convicted using DNA evidence, assuming that the proper number of sequences is analyzed.Where DNA Evidence Stands Now

The first conviction made using DNA evidence occurred in Portland, Oregon in 1987. Juries seemed hesitant at first to accept DNA evidence as conclusive, perhaps because of the complicated process - which has been extensively simplified for this article - that lawyers and specialists had to explain to the jurors. The process in its infancy left much room for defense attorneys to insert doubt into the cases against their clients. However, as science continued to develop, DNA evidence and technology gained a foothold in the United States' courts.

DNA evidence and associated technologies were thrust into the limelight when a man by the name of O.J. Simpson was accused of killing his ex-wife and her associate in 1995. DNA evidence also played a large role in the case of the disappearance of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey.

Just as DNA evidence has been used to convict people of crimes, innocent people wrongly accused have also been freed based on DNA evidence analyzed after the fact. Ten people have been freed from death row in the United States when DNA technology was finally made available to analyze their cases.

At the time of this writing, several states, prisons, and communities are developing programs to create DNA databases, especially from those considered dangerous felons or high risk criminals. The future of DNA evidence in the United States lies in the hands of legislatures, courts, and responsible DNA labs.

What is Litigation Funding?

Litigation funding is a concept that most individuals that are involved in a lawsuit will find beneficial to them. It is most commonly used in personal injury cases, but can be used for any type of lawsuit in which the individual is seeking funds in a settlement for their hardships, whatever those may be. It has been used in a variety of cases from sexual harassment to worker's compensation and many more. But, what is litigation funding and how do you know if it will benefit you? Take into consideration the number of things that it can offer to you and what will happen if you decide not to use it.

Funding A Lawsuit Through A Loan

Litigation funding is the process of securing a loan in order to pay for the cost of a lawsuit. It costs a good amount of money to see your lawsuit from start to finish. If you are suffering from medical problems and can not work, you probably need the funds to help you to pay your daily living expenses as well. These costs can be covered by your lawsuit loan, as they are often called. Believe it or not, these funds are available to you through litigation funding lenders, who are offering a wide range of options for those that need them.

Another benefit to litigation funding is the fact that you don't need to pay the funds back that you borrow to make these payments unless you actually win your case. When you do win your case, the settlement that you receive will be lessened the amount that you've borrowed to pay for your needs. But, if you lose the case or do not receive a settlement, then these funds are no longer you obligation to pay and the lender will not be able to recover them. It's completely legal and its part of the process of securing litigation funding in the first place.

Other Options?

Are there are other options to consider to fund the loan that you need to pay for the lawsuit that you know you should be filing? You could use a personal loan, credit cards or your own funds to pay these things. Many people don't have the funds necessary and they may not be able to secure these types of loans because of lack of employment or a back credit history due to the restrictions on their funds. Even if you do have these funds, you'll be risking your own money on these expenses, which means that if you do lose the case, you are out all that you've invested in it. That's an expensive risk for you to take.

Working with a litigation funding firm is a good option for those that know they deserve a fair share of the settlement. If you know this and you want to secure the funds that you need to make sure that your case reaches settlement, you'll want to consider litigation funding. It could mean funding a lawsuit that you deserve to win or giving up on it.

Amanda Bellview writes to expand the question base of attorneys and litigants looking for lawsuit litigation or pre settlement funding.

What Are The Auto Liability Insurance State Minimums For My State?

As you shop online for the best auto insurance deals you may begin to ask yourself what exactly is required by law when it comes to auto insurance. Fortunately this article outlines the auto liability insurance state minimums that you are required to have in order to legally drive in the United States. No matter what state you drive in all of them have financial responsibility laws and require motorists to purchase minimum amounts of auto liability insurance except for Tennessee, Wisconsin and New Hampshire.

Many websites and advocates of insurance (to include myself) recommend having a minimum of $100,000 for bodily injury protection per person and at least $300,000 for property damage costs and physical injury costs. The main reason for this is due to the increased amount of money needed to rectify an accident is usually more then what the states declare as the minimum amount of insurance coverage needed.

I have compiled the following information from the American Insurance Association, the Property Casualty Insurers Association, and the Insurance Information Institute. It shows the auto liability insurance state minimums as required by each state. In order to understand the numbers you must know what the mean. The first two numbers are for bodily injury liability and the third number represents the minimum amount of property damage liability.

As an example my home state of Missouri shows the following - Missouri 25/50/10. This means Missouri requires as a minimum coverage up to $50,000 for all persons injured in an accident, subject to a limit of $25,000 for one individual, and $10,000 coverage for property damage.

Alabama 20/40/10Alaska 50/100/25Arizona 15/30/10Arkansas 25/50/25 California 15/30/5Colorado 25/50/15Connecticut 20/40/10Delaware 15/30/5 D.C. 25/50/10Florida 10/20/10Georgia 25/50/25Hawaii 20/40/10 Idaho 25/50/15Illinois 20/40/15Indiana 25/50/10Iowa 20/40/15 Kansas 25/50/10Kentucky 25/50/10Louisiana 10/20/10Maine 50/100/25 Maryland 20/40/15Massachusetts 20/40/5 Michigan 20/40/10Minnesota 30/60/10 Mississippi 10/20/05Missouri 25/50/10Montana 25/50/10Nebraska 25/50/25 Nevada 15/30/10New Hampshire 25/50/25 New Jersey 15/30/5New Mexico 25/50/10 New York 25/50/10North Carolina 30/60/25 North Dakota 25/50/25Ohio 12.5/25/7.5 Oklahoma 10/20/10Oregon 25/50/10Pennsylvania 15/30/5Rhode Island 25/50/25 South Carolina 15/30/10 South Dakota 25/50/25 Tennessee 25/50/10 Texas 20/40/15 Utah 25/50/15Vermont 25/50/10Virginia 25/50/20Washington 25/50/10 West Virginia 20/40/10 Wisconsin 25/50/10Wyoming 25/50/20

Remember these figures only represent auto insurance liability state minimums. Many experts agree that more insurance is needed in order to fully protect yourself in the event youre involved in an automobile accident.

Why Scaffolders and Roofers Are Most At Risk

The Heath & Safety Executive (HSE) has just announced the provisional figures for worker fatalities in 2006/07 is 241 with workers in the agricultural and construction industries having the highest rates of fatal injury. In fact agricultural and construction workers accounted for 46% of all fatal injuries.

And scaffolders and roofers would seemingly be most at risk as falling from height accidents continue to be the most common type of accident, accounting for 19% of all fatal injuries in 2006/07.

So with such numbers of fatal injuries in addition to the hundreds and thousands of everyday accidents by people working at height here are just a few tips to help you reduce your exposure to risk and the likelihood of an accident occurring:

Plan ahead

As with most things careful planning is often the key to a job being done well. And when it comes to working at height this is even more important if the figures shown above are anything to go by. Someone once said if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Unfortunately for people working at height not taking the time to plan your work could result in not just failure but injury and death. Therefore when planning to work at height make sure the equipment you use is suitable for the job and the people assembling and using the equipment are trained and competent to do so.

Use the right equipment

When it comes to deciding on the best equipment for the job it is also important to remember not to try and save time by just using a ladder when for example scaffolding should be used. Ladders and stepladders are likely to be the most misused pieces of equipment for people working at height and as with any equipment you need to make sure that anyone using them have been trained and are competent using them.

And remember if the use of a ladder is appropriate then you should ensure it is in good condition, it placed on level and firm ground, it is secure and it is of the correct type (the HSE recommend class 1 industrial or EN131).

If you follow these simple yet highly effective tips then your chances of accidents and injuries should be greatly reduced. And the good news for scaffolding firms and roofers is that not only will this reduce your exposure to risk but it also could reduce your insurance premiums.

Scaffolders Insurance and Roofers Insurance often incur higher than normal premiums due to the fact that many of the accidents that happen are more serious than with other professions.

Therefore make sure you follow good health and safety procedures and make sure the only thing that falls are your Scaffolders Insurance and Roofers Insurance premiums.

Bankruptcy: What To Expect If You File For Bankruptcy

First, understand that filing bankruptcy should be a last resort if you have borrowed money and have absolutely no way or repaying it. Filing for bankruptcy will have a negative effect on your credit history for 10 years or longer and may also adversely impacts your quality of life.

If you do declare bankruptcy, here are some things to expect. First, you will need to be prepared to explain to a bankruptcy judge or trustee how you got yourself into such a financial pickle. You will be asked some very tough questions and need to be ready with good answers. It will not be an easy or fun task.

The only credit cards you will probably be allowed to keep are those that were completely paid off before you declared bankruptcy. You will most likely lose all others.

Once you file for bankruptcy, you will have trouble getting a mortgage, a loan, new credit cards, life insurance and even some jobs. This is because there are employers who are skittish about hiring people who have filed for bankruptcy as they feel it demonstrates a lack of restraint or self-discipline.

Some of your debts will not be discharged. This includes child support, student loans and back taxes. So if you think filing for bankruptcy will relieve you of that $12,000 you owe Uncle Sam, think again.

Keep in mind that a bankruptcy will stay on your credit report for at least 10 years. This means that if youre 35, youll be 45 before you can apply for a credit card, a mortgage, a loan or a job without the potential lender or employer seeing that you were once bankrupt.

The good news

Despite what you may have been told, it is possible to get a loan after filing for bankruptcy. It is called a bankruptcy loan and its purpose is to help you get back on your feet and reestablish your finances.

A bankruptcy loan is usually available only after your creditors have been paid and your bankruptcy dismissed. If you filed a Chapter 13 (reorganization) bankruptcy, your creditors must be paid in full before you apply for a large loan. And if you filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you must wait at least two years after the bankruptcy to apply.

The best way is to prove to potential creditors that you are no longer a bad risk is by paying all your bills on time, and showing that you can now handle a credit card. Once you have a track record for paying your bills on time, and have successfully maintained a credit card, you can ask your creditors for reference letters to prove to potential lenders that you have become credit worthy.

You should also know that there are lenders out there who will offer you a loan while you are still in bankruptcy as a way of paying off your creditors. Dont be lured into this. It usually just paves the way for further disaster as you are simply adding debt to debt. As a wise man once said, you just cant borrow your way out of debt.

Going through bankruptcy can be a painful and embarrassing experience. Be sure you consider all possible alternatives before filing. You might find that bankruptcy is easy to get into but very, very difficult to get out of.
